Look at the pictures: Child uses the pictures to figure out what the story is about and some of the difficult words.
Use your pointer finger: Child points to each word as he/she reads.
Go back and get a running start: Child goes back and reads a sentence over again to make sure the reading make sense or to assist him/her in figuring out a difficult word.
Skip word, finish sentence and go back and try the word: Child skips a tricky word, reads the rest of the sentence, then goes back to attempt the tricky word.
Look for chunks or parts you know: Child looks for small parts inside a tricky word to assist him/her.
Get mouth ready: Child looks at the first letter of the word and says the sound to figure out what word would make sense in the text.
Does the story make sense? Child reads and thinks if what he/she read makes sense.
Self Correction: Child knows an error has been made while reading and he/she goes back to correct.
