• Reading Strategies

    • Look at the pictures:  Child uses the pictures to figure out what the story is about and some of the difficult words.

    • Use your pointer finger:  Child points to each word as he/she reads.

    • Go back and get a running start:  Child goes back and reads a sentence over again to make sure the reading make sense or to assist him/her in figuring out a difficult word.

    • Skip word, finish sentence and go back and try the word:  Child skips a tricky word, reads the rest of the sentence, then goes back to attempt the tricky word.

    • Look for chunks or parts you know:  Child looks for small parts inside a tricky word to assist him/her.

    • Get mouth ready:  Child looks at the first letter of the word and says the sound to figure out what word would make sense in the text.

    • Does the story make sense?  Child reads and thinks if what he/she read makes sense.

    • Self Correction:  Child knows an error has been made while reading and he/she goes back to correct.
