Mrs. Kristi Millican
Welcome to Harnett Central Middle School! This school is my home; I began my education career 20 years ago at HCMS as an Exceptional Children's Teacher. After 10 years in the classroom, I was given the opportunity to join the HCMS Counseling Department. Helping young people learn about themselves and realize the power they have over their possibilities is my passion. As a teacher, I was able to reach those in my classroom. As a school counselor, I can reach those in an entire grade level!
I grew up in Shelby, NC and relocated to Harnett County 20 years ago. I earned my BA degree in Psychology at NC State University, with a minor in Sociology. I then simultaneously attended Campbell University, earning my Master of Education degree in School Counseling, and UNC-Pembroke, obtaining my Licensure in Special Education with a concentration in Learning Disabilities. My husband and I have two wonderful, energetic children and a charcoal lab named Blu. I value my children and my family, and will value your children as well. The lessons young people learn today will carry them through the highs and lows that life will show them. My goal is to provide students with the tools they need in order to accomplish their highest goals. As I cannot do this alone, I look forward to collaborating with parents and staff members in support of our children. I encourage you, as a parent of a 6th grader at HCMS, to complete our Parent Needs Assessment, so that as a counseling department we may better meet the needs of our school, but so that I can also better meet the needs of our 6th grade students.
"Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see."

ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL........
Students in the middle level grades are wonderful, creative individuals who are in the midst of some of the most important developmental years of their lives. Important tasks during this stage include developing a sense of self by building on and refining skills learned in earlier years while simultaneously integrating many roles that they currently have as individuals (child, friend, student - just to name a few). Challenges during middle school years can feel overwhelming; students are doing all of these things while comparing themselves to other students and adults, along with trying to find their personal power and place in the world around them. These years are crucial for building self esteem (sense of personal worth) and self efficacy (sense of belief in capabilities). I am thankful to assist them during this time in their lives. I am also thankful to work with such a diverse and caring population of parents and teachers at this level.
As a parent of a child who has just entered middle school, sometimes questions and / or concerns arise. If this happens, please feel free to contact me! You can reach me by email at kmillican@harnett.k12.nc.us, by phone at 919-639-6000 ext. 614, or by completing this short Parent-Counselor Request Form. If you choose to complete this form, I will be alerted by email that your request has been submitted. If your student chooses to set up an appointment with me, he/she can fill out the Student-Counselor Request Form.
Also, to make you aware, SafeSchools Alert is a site you can visit to report bullying to our school. This is completely annonymous. We would certainly rather speak with you about what is going on; however, if you feel more comfortable reporting annonymously, please use this site. Thank you for being proactive and speaking up for our students at Harnet Central Middle School!
