Welcome to Harnett County Schools' Exceptional Children's Department

  • We provide special education and related services as designated by the federal mandates of the Individual with Disabilities Act and the regulations of the North Carolina Public School Law, Article 9.

    If you are new to Harnett County and have a child who has been receiving special education services, you will need to register your child at the school within your home attendance zone.  You will also need to complete the following steps:

    • Complete an enrollment packet and ensure that you check "Yes" if your child has an IEP
    • Complete necessary transportation form
    • Share a copy of your child's most recent IEP
    • Sign a "Release of Information" form for access to your child's educational records

    The Harnett County School System is proud to select Mrs. Susan Dunn as the 2019-2020 Educator of Excellence!  Mrs. Dunn has served as an educator in Harnett County for eight years.  She is an alumnus of Campbell University and has a Masters degree from Western Carolina University. 

    Mrs. Dunn is currently a Life Skills teacher at Triton High School.   She is an amazing educator that truly believes in her students’ abilities and frequently showcases their talents.  She serves as a member of our district’s Exceptional Children Advisory Board and has graciously shared her instructional practices during presentations to fellow educators.  She has also assisted with the development of a webinar that demonstrated Unique Learning Systems to teachers.  Ms. Dunn is a leader in her school and very involved in the community.

     Mrs. Dunn represented Harnett County Schools at the 69th Conference on Exceptional Children in Greensboro, NC.   She along with educators from each of the 115 schools systems were presented the 2019 Educator of Excellence Award.
