Course Overview
“Yearbook” is an elective course that gives students marketable experience in print media publishing. This course solely works toward the completion and selling of a large finished product, the Overhills High School Yaguara Yearbook. Yearbook class is different from every course taught at this school in that it is a real business maintaining an account that must balance-out at the end of the year. In class, students compose, construct, and edit all elements of computerized text layout, graphic art, and digital photography. Students will create the book using Jostens. “Yearbook” in turn covers many of the Content Standards and Objectives encountered in English courses, as also does it for Objectives of art, business, and computer technology courses. Because “Yearbook” is a monetary business, students must cooperatively work with others, must be industrious, and be eager to be creative. Out of class and after school, students will take pictures at various school and community events, sell and design advertising, and disseminate yearbook order forms. Students are responsible for the proper care and handling of our digital cameras. This course also examines the legal and ethical issues of media law and copyright.
Course Materials
- 32gb SD card (if you choose to use a regular camera)
- Planning notebook
Advertising Requirements
All staff members are required to sell advertising. Advertising sales are a grade. Ad sales are the life’s blood of the yearbook. Without community support, we simply could not produce the yearbook or purchase the much-needed equipment and supplies to help us capture every moment.
Absences
Yearbook operates as a business; therefore, you need to be here and ready to work. If you are absent on the day of a deadline, it is still your responsibility to make sure your spread is completed. There is a great deal to accomplish and your fellow staff members are relying on you.
Grading Requirements
Staff are graded based on:
- Initial Learning 30% - weekly reports, calendar and classwork assignments
- Formative Assessments 30% - photography, copy, design, advertising
