About Me:   Hello, my name is Dr. Franchetta Beckford. This is my fifth year teaching in North Carolina; however, I have been an educator for 26 years. I hold a bachelor's degree in English; a master's degree in teaching; and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction. I have taught mainly in Florida and Georgia.

In English IV, students will explore British literature from its early origins to the present.  Parents, you may remember Beowulf or The Canterbury Tales.  Well, that is where we will start. How lucky students are to allowed to read the translated versions?  Reading this material can be tedious, but I will do what I can to make it relatable.  The students have already learned that most modern epic movies, no matter if it's Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean, follow the tried-and-true heroic quest found in British epic poetry.  Expect less work done at home and more work done at school.  I tried to squeeze as much as I can into 90 minutes as I possibly can.

In English III, the literature pieces are quite diverse.  The curriculum begins with Native American Origin Myths, includes Puritan literature, Transcendentalism authors, and Romanticism (think Edgar Allen Poe).  What is significant about American Literature is its close alignment to the development of our country.  Students who enjoy learning about history with easily follow the American Literature timeline; however, the timeline is helpful in understanding the impact of American Literature better.

I always plan on having an exceptional school year.  What I ask most of students is to bring a positive and open spirit to the classroom.  And Parents, I'd like to thank you for your support.  Please email me if you have need.
